BARBARA BRIGGS - OWNER AND TRAINER

I have been a poodle owner for over 40 years, all sizes and colors.  I treasure their quick intelligence, non-shedding,
non-smelling coat, and lively personalities.  While I have been lucky to have physically healthy dogs, several have had
behavioral issues that have prompted me to study and work with other trainers, attend seminars and take all kinds of classes
in order to learn how to best correct their problems and address their needs.  As they say, experience is often the best teacher.
As a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, I can help you with your dog problems.  I'll be glad to consult with you by
phone or email and suggest the type of approach that I feel will work best for you and your dog.

MY METHOD

I use a positive reward method of training that helps our pets become happy, confident and well-behaved members of our
families.  Punitive methods only result in a dog complying in order to avoid punishment.  There is a better way.
Clicker training
is an example of one wonderful way to interact with our pets and show them what we want and expect from them in a way that
is fun for both of us.  It can impact every aspect of our day to day interactions with our pets.  With proper training and
knowledge, we  can prevent so many common behavior problems.  It just takes a commitment on the owner's part to invest
some time in learning and practicing simple steps that will lead to a happier dog, AND a happier owner.

MY PHILOSOPHY

I aim to do what I can to foster the spirit of the above poem.  I think all living things deserve to be treated with respect and
dignity.  Many of the problems that occur in our relationships with our pets come from our own failures, not those of our pets.
We need to realize that pet ownership is a long-lasting responsibility, and educate ourselves as to how we can make that
relationship the most fulfilling for both our pets and ourselves.  I have a great emotional attachment to my dogs, but I don't
believe in treating them like "babies" or "little people".  Dogs are social animals, who want to be with us, but WE need to be in
charge and set the rules and limitations in a consistent, firm and loving way.  Training teaches US how to do that for our dogs.
I can provide you with the tools you need in order to teach your dog what you expect from him. Training your dog is the
smartest and most loving thing you can do for him.
